# Canazei and Val di Fassa Hiking Guide

**Published:** 2026-10-19 · **Category:** Town Guide

> From Canazei, in the Val di Fassa, summer buses climb to the Pordoi, Sella and Fedaia passes, a gondola leaves from the village and a shuttle serves the Val Contrin. The Guest Card from partner accommodation covers the valley's buses.

## Why Choose Canazei as a Hiking Base?
Canazei, at 1,465 m (4,806 ft), with its hamlets of Gries, Alba and Penia, is one of the seven villages of the Val di Fassa, in Trentino. It sits between three great Dolomite massifs: the **Marmolada**, the **Sella group** and the **Gran Vernèl**.

The village suits you if you come without a car and like to switch passes from one day to the next, and it suits families looking for short outings with a hut as the goal.

## How Do You Get There and Get Around Without a Car?
The nearest railway stations are **Trento**, **Bolzano** and **Ora**; from each, a bus reaches the valley every day. **From Trento**, Trentino Trasporti line 101 runs up to Canazei and serves every village in the valley, from Moena to Penia; from Bolzano and Ora, the buses are run by Südtirol Mobil.

For flights and the rest of the way to the Dolomites, our [guide to getting to the Dolomites](/blog/how-to-get-to-the-dolomites-a-complete-logistics-guide/) compares the airports and the car-free options.

**Pass buses.** In summer, Trentino Trasporti runs five lines up to the passes:

- **B130** Canazei - Passo Pordoi.
- **B129** Canazei - Passo Sella, the pass linking the Val di Fassa to the Val Gardena.
- **B131** Penia - Passo Fedaia, at the foot of the Marmolada.
- **123** Moena - [Passo San Pellegrino](/dolomites-passes/passo-san-pellegrino/) - Falcade.
- **180** Pera (Vigo in July and August) - [Passo Costalunga](/dolomites-passes/passo-costalunga/), about 5 km (3.1 mi) from Vigo, then Bolzano.

Dates and times are on the [tourist board's Trentino Trasporti bus page](https://www.fassa.com/en/how-to-reach-us/trentino-trasporti-bus-service).

**The Val di Fassa Guest Card.** It is free and handed out by your accommodation if it is a partner of the tourist board. During your stay, it gives you free travel on Trentino Trasporti buses and on some Südtirol Mobil lines: check which lines are included before counting on it. Each ride is validated in the Mio Trentino app (Transport, then Travel with Guest Card).

**Shuttles in the side valleys.** Besides the Val Contrin, seasonal shuttles or taxis run up three more valleys; check dates and fares with the Val di Fassa tourist board:

- the Val Duron, from Campitello to the Rifugio Micheluzzi;
- the Val San Nicolò, a valley of meadows, cabins and barns, as far as Saùch;
- the Val Monzoni to the Malga Monzoni (service until mid-October).

## How Do You Walk Up to the Passo Pordoi From Canazei?
[Passo Pordoi](/dolomites-passes/passo-pordoi/)

The gondola (or the road) climbs from Canazei to Pecol, from where the pass is a 1 hour 15 minute walk, with 314 m (1,030 ft) of climbing over 2.5 km (1.6 mi). To get back without walking down, the B130 links the pass to Canazei.

At the pass, the Sass Pordoi cable car climbs to a terrace with a view of the Marmolada, the Sella and the Piz Boè: pick a clear day. The Piz Boè (3,152 m (10,341 ft)) is reached from the top station by a 7.8 km (4.8 mi) loop, about 3 hours 15 minutes, but it is an outing above 3,000 m (9,843 ft): go properly equipped and in good weather.

## What Can You Do at the Passo Sella and the Passo Fedaia by Bus?
[Passo Sella](/dolomites-passes/passo-sella/)

At the Passo Sella, where the B129 drops you, the Sassolungo circuit starts: 15.8 km (9.8 mi) and nearly 5 hours of walking, a proper day's hike. The Forcella del Sassolungo gondola, starting at the pass, gains height with no approach walk.

[Passo Fedaia](/dolomites-passes/passo-fedaia/)

The Fedaia is the pass of the Marmolada: its north face, which carries the largest glacier in the Dolomites, comes down to Lake Fedaia. To walk there, take the B130 up to the Passo Pordoi, then follow trail 601 and the Bindelweg (Viel del Pan) to the Fedaia: 2 hours 15 minutes for 7 km (4.3 mi). The B131 takes you back down to Penia.

## Which Viewpoints Can You Reach by Lift?
Above Pecol, a cable car continues to the **Col dei Rossi**; a second one goes straight up from Alba. In neighbouring Campitello, a three-cable gondola reaches the **Col Rodella** (2,480 m (8,136 ft)). The 2026 season dates:

- Canazei - Pecol and Pecol - Col dei Rossi: 13 June to 27 September.
- Alba - Col dei Rossi: 13 June to 13 September only.
- Campitello - Col Rodella: 13 June to 11 October.
- Passo Pordoi - Sass Pordoi: 14 May to 1 November.

If you plan three or more days on the lifts, the **Panorama Pass** is the better deal: in 2026 it covered 31 lifts in the valley from 30 May to 11 October, for 83 EUR ($96) (3 days out of 6) or 116 EUR ($135) (6 days), free for children under 8. For a single outing, the Canazei - Pecol return cost 16 EUR ($19) and the Belvedere - Rodella - Sass Pordoi day pass 47 EUR ($55). Up-to-date times and prices are on the [tourist board's summer lifts page](https://www.fassa.com/en/ski-lifts-slopes/summer-lifts).

## Which Hut Should You Aim For From Canazei?
[Rifugio Contrin](/mountain-huts/rifugio-contrin/)

The Rifugio Contrin, built in the late 19th century by the Nuremberg section of the Alpenverein, is open from mid-June to late September ([the hut's page on the Val di Fassa tourist board site](https://www.fassa.com/it/dove-dormire/contrin-1), in Italian): call the hut keeper before you set out. It is the starting point for crossing the Marmolada group: the Falier hut, at the foot of its south face, is 2 hours 30 minutes away on foot, EE level (experienced hikers).

The Val Contrin is closed to cars. From June to October, a minibus taxi runs from the car park of the Ciampac gondola in Alba up to Baita Locia Contrin; from there, 3.4 km (2.1 mi) of trail and 280 m (919 ft) of climb lead to the hut in 1 hour 15 minutes on average, with the final switchbacks the steepest part.

In 2026 the shuttle cost 32 EUR ($37) per trip for 1 to 4 people and 8 EUR ($9) per person from 5 people, payable on board. Book no later than the day before on the [Val di Fassa tourist board's shuttle page](https://www.fassa.com/en/services/val-contrin-shuttle-service), and call the driver for the return. Until 21 June and from 7 September, the Guest Card gives one free return journey, provided at least four of you travel in each direction. Parking at the Ciampac lifts is paid.

## Where Should You Stay in Canazei?
The valley offers the whole range: hotels, apartments and holiday houses, B&Bs, farm stays, campsites and mountain huts. The real choice is the village, depending on the hikes you have in mind.

- **Canazei, Alba or Penia**: for the Pordoi, Sella and Fedaia passes and the Val Contrin, without a car.
- **Campitello di Fassa** (1,450 m (4,757 ft)), below the Sassolungo: preferable to Canazei if you mostly want the Sassolungo and the Col Rodella, whose gondola leaves from the village.
- **Pozza di Fassa** (1,320 m (4,331 ft)): overlooked by the Cima Undici, the Cima Dodici and the Vajolet Towers. The Val San Nicolò and Val Monzoni shuttles leave from the village: preferable if those two valleys are your plan.
- **Vigo di Fassa** (1,382 m (4,534 ft)): the main gateway to the Vajolet Towers, the Passo Principe and the Antermoia. Preferable if those peaks are your goal.

If you are weighing up another valley, our guides to [Ortisei and the Val Gardena](/blog/ortisei-val-gardena-hiking-guide/) and to [Alta Badia and Corvara](/blog/alta-badia-corvara-hiking-guide/) answer the same questions on the other side of the Sella, and our [comparison of the best towns for hiking](/best-towns/) sets the bases side by side.

## When Is the Best Time to Hike From Canazei?
Aim for mid-June to mid-September: in 2026, that is the window when the four lifts named above all ran at the same time, and the 2027 dates, not yet published, are worth checking in spring on the tourist board pages linked above. For month-by-month weather and crowds across the whole range, see our [guide to the best time to hike in the Dolomites](/blog/best-time-to-visit-dolomites/).
