# Lago di Braies

Visit the most famous lake in the Italian Dolomites. This guide covers the essential shoreline loop, the easy hike to Malga Foresta, and critical 2026 parking and shuttle regulations.

## Overview

Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) is the undisputed 'Pearl of the Dolomites,' a high-altitude lake sitting at 1,496 m (4,908 ft) at the foot of the massive Croda del Becco (Seekofel). Famous for its emerald-green waters and iconic wooden boat house, the lake offers a flat, accessible loop perfect for families and photographers. For those seeking more solitude, an extension to the alpine pastures of Malga Foresta adds 3.2 km (2 mi) of gentle climbing through a larch forest, providing a stark contrast to the busy lakeshore crowds.

## Map of Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies is located in the Prags Valley within the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park in South Tyrol. The lake serves as the official starting point for the Alta Via 1, the most famous long-distance trek in the Dolomites. The primary circuit hugs the shoreline, while the southern end opens up into a wide gravel basin leading toward the higher peaks.

## Which Trail Experience Should You Choose?
### Option #1: The Classic Lakeside Loop
![Walking path along the eastern shore of Lago di Braies](/images/lago_di_braies_2_square.webp)
- **The Goal:** A relaxing, scenic walk that stays entirely on the lakeside to admire the reflections of the Croda del Becco (Seekofel).
- **The Route Data:**
    - **Start/End:** Hotel Pragser Wildsee (North shore)
    - **How to get to the start:** Park at the designated P4 lot or take the Line 442 bus from Dobbiaco (Toblach).
    - **Trail Sequence:** Trail No. 1 (clockwise or counter-clockwise)
    - **Distance:** 3.6 km (2.2 mi)
    - **Elevation:** +50 m (164 ft) ascent / -50 m (164 ft) descent.
- **The Reality:** The western shore is flat and wide, suitable for strollers. The eastern shore is narrower with several sets of stairs carved into the rock. If you have mobility issues, stick to an out-and-back walk on the western side. For tips on managing this hike with children of different ages, see our [family hiking guide](/blog/dolomites-with-kids/). Expect heavy crowds between 10:00 and 15:00.

### Option #2: Extension to Malga Foresta (Grünwaldalm)
![The open pastures of Malga Foresta](/images/malga_foresta_grunwaldalm_dolomites.webp)
- **The Goal:** To escape the lakeside selfies and experience a traditional South Tyrolean dairy farm.
- **The Route Data:**
    - **Start/End:** North shore (Loop + extension)
    - **How to get to the start:** Same as Option #1.
    - **Trail Sequence:** Follow the western lakeside path (Trail No. 1) to the southern end of the lake, then turn onto Trail No. 19 toward Malga Foresta.
    - **Distance:** 6.8 km (4.2 mi)
    - **Elevation:** +150 m (492 ft) ascent / -150 m (492 ft) descent.
- **The Reality:** This version adds about 45 minutes of walking each way. The path to Malga Foresta is a wide gravel road that climbs gently through the woods. At the hut, you will find grazing cattle and a full menu of local Speck and cheeses. It is much quieter than the lake itself.

## How to Get to Lago di Braies?
The popularity of Lago di Braies has led to strict traffic regulations. For 2026, between **July 1 and September 15**, the road into the Prags Valley is closed to private vehicles from **09:00 to 16:00** unless you have a pre-booked parking ticket or a restaurant reservation. Check the prags.bz portal for the current year's dates before driving.

### The Driving Ban (Transit Rules)
If you plan to drive, you must book your parking space online in advance at the official Prags Dolomites website. Prices for a day pass usually range from €15 ($16) to €40 ($43) depending on proximity to the water. If you arrive after the road closes without a permit, you will be turned back at the valley entrance.

### Reaching the Lake by Bus
The Line 442 (from Dobbiaco/Toblach) and Line 439 (from Monguelfo/Welsberg) are the primary shuttles. During peak summer, these must be reserved and paid for online in advance. Do not expect to buy a ticket on the bus; you will likely be denied boarding.

## When Should You Visit & How to Check Conditions?
The lake is accessible year-round, but the experience changes drastically.

### The Best Season
**June to early July:** Best for seeing the water at its highest level and most vibrant emerald color.
**September to October:** The larch trees turn gold, and the summer crowds dissipate.
**Winter (December - March):** The lake freezes solid and is covered in snow. You can walk directly across the ice.

### How to Check the Weather
Always check the Meteoblue forecast for "Prags" or 'Braies" before heading out. Cloud cover can completely hide the Croda del Becco, which is the backdrop of the famous photos.
<iframe src="https://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/widget/three/braies_italy_6534775?geoloc=fixed&nocurrent=0&noforecast=0&days=4&tempunit=CELSIUS&windunit=KILOMETER_PER_HOUR&layout=light" frameborder="0" scrolling="NO" allowtransparency="true" sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox" style="width: 100%; height: 600px" loading="lazy"></iframe>

## What Essentials Must Be in Your Pack?
### Footwear
Standard sneakers are sufficient for the western shore and the walk to Malga Foresta. If you plan to complete the full loop via the eastern shore, shoes with decent grip are recommended as the rock steps can become slippery when wet.

### Sun Protection
The sun reflects intensely off the lake surface. Bring a hat and high-SPF sunscreen. There is very little shade on the eastern side of the loop.

### Hydration & Hut Logistics
There is a public water fountain near the Hotel Pragser Wildsee. For food, the Hotel has a bistro, but **Malga Foresta** is the more authentic choice. Note that Malga Foresta is often cash-only - carry at least €30 ($32) per person for a proper meal and drinks.

## The Rowboat Experience
To rent the famous wooden boats, you must visit the "Embaire" pier.
- **Cost:** Approximately €50 ($54) for 45 minutes.
- **Pro Tip:** Private photoshoot bookings occur before 08:30. If you want the boat for yourself without a crowd, you must pay a premium for early access.
