## Description

Rifugio Croda da Lago stands at 2,046 m (6,713 ft) on the western shore of **Lago Federa**, a deeply photogenic alpine lake framed by larch trees and the massive north face of **Croda da Lago**. The reflection of the rock wall in the lake's still water is one of the most iconic images in the Dolomites. The hut is a key stop on the **Dolomites Alta Via 1** and draws photographers, painters, and hikers throughout the summer.

The setting is remarkably peaceful despite its fame. The lake sits in a shallow basin surrounded by ancient **larch forest**, and the trails approaching from every direction offer constantly changing perspectives on the surrounding peaks. To the north, the view extends toward the **Tofane** and **Cristallo** groups. Autumn is especially rewarding, when the larches turn brilliant gold against the grey limestone.

The hut accommodates 50 guests in dormitories and a few private rooms. The terrace overlooking the lake is the perfect spot for an afternoon drink. The most common approach is a 90-minute walk from **Campo di Sotto** above Cortina or a longer route via **Passo Giau**. The hut is family-run and warmly welcoming, but its popularity means booking well in advance is essential from July onward.
