## Description

Rifugio Duca D'Aosta is perched at 2,098 m (6,883 ft) on a grassy terrace on the southern flank of the **Tofane** group, overlooking the **Ampezzo valley** and the town of **Cortina d'Ampezzo** below. The hut is named after the Duke of Aosta and has long served as a base for alpinists approaching the demanding south face routes on **Tofana di Rozes**, including the classic **Via Ferrata Giovanni Lipella**.

The setting is dramatic - towering limestone walls rise directly above the hut, while the terrace looks out across a wide panorama taking in **Croda da Lago**, the **Cinque Torri**, and the distant **Civetta**. The surrounding slopes are a mix of rocky terrain and patches of dwarf pine, with marmots frequently heard whistling from the boulder fields.

With only 15 beds, this is one of the most intimate refuges in the Cortina area. The atmosphere is welcoming and unhurried, with home-cooked meals served in a snug dining room. Access is via a marked trail from the **Freccia nel Cielo** mid-station or a longer approach from **Passo Falzarego**. Reservations are essential due to the very limited capacity.
