## Description

Rifugio Pian de Fontana is situated at 1,632 m (5,354 ft) in a remote clearing within the **Schiara group**, the southernmost major massif of the Dolomites. The hut lies in a broad alpine basin surrounded by dense forest and the rugged limestone walls of **Monte Schiara** and **Monte Pelf**. It falls within the province of **Belluno**, far from the heavily visited trails of the northern Dolomites.

This is one of the most secluded rifugios in the entire range, and it forms a key stage on the **Alta Via 1** as the route approaches its southern terminus in **Belluno**. The surrounding terrain is wild and heavily forested, with trails that feel genuinely remote. Hikers passing through often describe the Schiara section as the most adventurous and least crowded portion of the entire Alta Via. The views from the nearby ridges extend south across the Venetian plains.

Access requires a long approach on foot - the most common route from **Val di Piero** takes roughly three hours through steep forest trails. The hut is small and intimate with just 23 beds in dormitory rooms and simple but hearty meals. Given its isolation, supplies are limited and booking ahead is essential. This is a hut for experienced hikers seeking genuine solitude.
