# Rifugio Pomedes

A high-altitude refuge on the flanks of the Tofane massif, serving as the gateway to the famous Galleria del Castelletto WWI tunnel and the Tofana di Rozes summit.

## Description

Rifugio Pomedes sits at 2,303 m (7,556 ft) on a ledge high on the southern face of the **Tofane** group, directly above **Cortina d'Ampezzo**. The hut is the primary staging point for the ascent of **Tofana di Rozes** and for the legendary **Galleria del Castelletto** - a 500-metre military tunnel blasted through the mountain during World War I. Its exposed position offers unobstructed views over the entire Ampezzo valley.

The surrounding terrain is steep and rocky, with scree fields giving way to the vertical limestone walls of the **Tofana di Rozes** above. To the east, the panorama spans from the **Cristallo** group to the distant **Tre Cime di Lavaredo**. The area is a haven for chamois, often spotted on the cliffs in the early morning hours.

The hut is reached most commonly via the **Freccia nel Cielo** cable car to **Ra Valles**, followed by a 45-minute traverse along a well-marked trail. Dormitory accommodation is simple but clean. The restaurant serves generous portions of traditional mountain fare. Booking is advisable for weekends and throughout August.
