Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) is the undisputed 'Pearl of the Dolomites,' a high-altitude lake at the foot of the massive Croda del Becco (Seekofel). Famous for its emerald-green waters and iconic wooden boat house, the lake offers a flat, accessible loop perfect for families and photographers. For those seeking more solitude, an extension to the alpine pastures of Malga Foresta adds a gentle climb through a larch forest, providing a stark contrast to the bustling lakeshore.

Which Trail Experience Should You Choose?
Option #1: The Classic Lakeside Loop
- The Goal: A relaxing, scenic walk that stays entirely on the lakeside to admire the reflections of the Croda del Becco (Seekofel).
- The Route Data:
- Start/End: North shore of the lake
- How to get to the start: Park at the P4 lot (100 m from the lake) or take the Line 442 bus from Dobbiaco (Toblach).
- Sequence: Lake loop (clockwise or counter-clockwise)
- The Reality: The western shore is flat and wide; the eastern shore is narrower, with some flights of steps. If you have mobility issues, stick to an out-and-back on the western shore. For tips suited to all age groups, see our family hiking guide. Expect crowds around midday.
Option #2: Extension to Malga Foresta (Grünwaldalm)
- The Goal: To escape the lakeside selfies and experience a traditional South Tyrolean dairy farm.
- The Route Data:
- Start/End: North shore (Loop + extension)
- How to get to the start: Same as Option #1.
- Sequence: Follow the western lakeside path to the southern end of the lake, then the trail toward Malga Foresta.
- Distance: 6.8 km4.2 mi
- Elevation: +150 m492 ft ascent / -150 m492 ft descent.
- The Reality: The path to Malga Foresta is a wide gravel track that climbs gently through the woods. At the hut, you will find cows grazing. It is far quieter than the lake itself.
How to Get to Lago di Braies?
The popularity of Lago di Braies has led to strict traffic regulations. In 2026, from 1 July to 15 September, the Braies valley was reachable from 09:00 to 16:00 only by public transport, on foot, by bike, or with an online reservation or a valid transit permit. For 2027, a road regulation is again planned for the summer: check the official Prags valley portal before you go.
The Driving Ban (Transit Rules)
If you plan to drive during the restricted window, book online on the valley portal. In 2026, the combined ticket cost 44 EUR$51 and included the day's transit permit, a guaranteed parking space and a 22 EUR$26 voucher to spend in the valley's restaurants and shops; the voucher exists only with advance booking. Arriving before 09:00 is allowed, but it does not guarantee a parking space. Spaces are limited and the lake car parks are paid: P4 is 100 m from the lake, P3 300 m, P2 800 m. Other accesses to book across the Dolomites are gathered in our access guide.
Reaching the Lake by Bus
Line 442 links Dobbiaco and Villabassa directly to the lake; in high season, line 439 reinforces the service from Monguelfo station. During the regulation, reservation with online payment is required, and once the bus seats are full, access by bus is no longer possible. In that period, the Mobilcard and guest cards (Südtirol / Alto Adige Guest Pass) are not valid on these buses.
When Should You Visit & How to Check Conditions?
The experience changes with the season.
The Best Season
June to early July: The start of summer, before the peak season.
September to October: The larch trees turn gold, and the summer crowds dissipate.
Winter (December - March): The lake is covered in snow; check conditions before venturing onto its shores.
How to Check the Weather
Always check the Meteoblue forecast for "Prags" or 'Braies" before heading out. Cloud cover can completely hide the Croda del Becco, which is the backdrop of the famous photos.
What Essentials Must Be in Your Pack?
Footwear
Standard sneakers are sufficient for the western shore and the walk to Malga Foresta. If you plan to complete the full loop via the eastern shore, shoes with decent grip are recommended as the rock steps can become slippery when wet.
Sun Protection
The sun reflects intensely off the lake surface. Bring a hat and a high-SPF sunscreen. Shade can be scarce on the eastern shore of the circuit.
Hydration & Hut Logistics
For food, Malga Foresta is the more authentic choice; carry cash as a precaution and ask on site about food.
The Rowboat Experience
To rent the famous wooden boats, head to the boat house on the eastern shore of the lake.
- Rule: Personal boats and stand-up paddleboards are not allowed.
