Passo Costalunga (Karerpass in German) is at 1,745 m5,725 ft. Do not confuse it with Lake Carezza, just below.
Where is Passo Costalunga and what can you see from it?
The pass sits on the ridge that separates the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) massif from the Latemar. From the pass, both massifs are in front of you, along with the Roda di Vael.
Pass or Lake Carezza?
These are two different stops. Lake Carezza (Karersee) is a small mountain lake known for its deep green water.
From the lake, cross the suspension bridge and follow trail 6 to the pass: allow 1 hour for 3.2 km2 mi and 200 m656 ft of climbing.

How do you get to Passo Costalunga?
By bus, line 180 of Südtirol Mobil serves the pass every hour from Bolzano, with a stop at Lake Carezza. On the Val di Fassa side, it usually starts from Pera di Fassa, but in July and August from Vigo di Fassa only. Check timetables with Südtirol Mobil.
By car, the pass is on the SS 241. Road conditions in South Tyrol can be followed on the traffic information centre of the Province of Bolzano.
What can you do from Passo Costalunga?
Walk up to Rifugio Paolina, for a second viewpoint, higher than the pass.
Arrive on foot from the valley: two climbs, both longer than the one from the lake:
- from Moena, in the Val di Fassa, on trail 519: 2 hours 30 minutes for 6.45 km4 mi and 580 m1,903 ft of climbing;
- from Nova Levante (Welschnofen), on trails 10 A, 10, 13 then 21: 3 hours for 9.1 km5.7 mi and 688 m2,257 ft of climbing.
These are one-way routes.

When should you go to Passo Costalunga?
In summer, avoid the peak hours, 9 am to noon. For the lake, come in the evening or early in the morning, when it looks its best.
