Hiking from Alleghe, on its lake below the Civetta: the lake loop, the Col dei Baldi gondolas, the Coldai, Tissi and Vazzoler huts, the Alta Via 1, summer buses from Belluno and when the lifts run.

TL;DR

Alleghe, at 979 m on its lake below the Civetta, is a base for day trips to the Coldai, Tissi and Vazzoler huts, with two gondolas up to the Col dei Baldi. Without a car, plan on two buses from Belluno, changing at Agordo.

Why Choose Alleghe as a Hiking Base?

View on Map

Alleghe suits you if you want to sleep by a lake and head up to the Civetta huts each day, leaving the first climb to the gondolas. The village, at 979 m3,212 ft, is in the Cordevole valley, at the foot of Monte Civetta (3,220 m10,564 ft).

The lake was formed in 1771, when a landslide from Monte Piz dammed the Cordevole, destroying three villages and killing forty-nine people.

The lake loop is 5.1 km3.2 mi and 1 hour 15 minutes of easy walking: the walk for your arrival day, and one for the whole family.

To compare Alleghe with Cortina, Arabba or the Val Gardena, our comparison of the best towns for hiking sets the main bases of the range side by side.

How Do You Get There and Get Around Without a Car?

Without a car, you reach Alleghe on two Dolomiti Bus lines, changing at Agordo:

  • line 1, from the Belluno FS stop to Agordo;
  • lines 2, 3 or 54, from Agordo to the Alleghe Piazza stop.

Times and disruptions are on the Dolomiti Bus website. Our guide to getting to the Dolomites compares the airports and the car-free routes to the valleys.

Locally, the same lines 2, 3 and 54 run up the valley to Caprile and Arabba. Line 54, daily in summer, also serves Malga Ciapela, Pian di Fedaia and the Rifugio Marmolada, at the foot of the Marmolada, as well as Falcade: enough to spend a day in another valley without changing accommodation.

Which Huts Should You Target From Alleghe?

To gain height, two gondolas run in succession, from Alleghe to the Piani di Pezzè and then up to the Col dei Baldi, in a little under half an hour. Budget 23 EUR$27 for the round trip to the Col dei Baldi (2026 fare), free up to age 8 and half price up to 18; the single-gondola ticket and the online discount are on the Alleghe Funivie summer price list.

From the Col dei Baldi, a comfortable mule track descends to Malga Pioda, then trail 556 climbs in about an hour to the hut and its lake, just above. From the Piani di Pezzè (first gondola), allow 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours on trails 564 and 556, or 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes by an unnumbered variant that passes the lake and the Forcella Coldai, reserved for experienced hikers (EE).

The Tissi hut stands on the summit of the Col Reàn, at 2,250 m7,382 ft, facing the north-west wall of the Civetta. From the cross on the col, the view drops to Lake Alleghe and takes in most of the great Dolomite groups.

From Alleghe-Fontanive (1,078 m3,537 ft), through the Val d’Antersàs and the Val Civetta, allow 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes, EE level. With the gondolas, the route from the Col dei Baldi is 12 km7.5 mi with 330 m1,083 ft of height difference, intermediate level.

The Tissi hut is a stage of the Alta Via 1, between the Passo Staulanza hut and the Carestiato hut: a night there gives a taste of the Alta Via without walking all of it.

The Vazzoler hut occupies the esplanade of the Col Negro di Pelsa, at the mouth of the Val dei Cantoni, near two great pillars, the Torre Venezia and the Torre Trieste, facing the west side of the Moiazza: climbers have made it one of their bases. Right next to it, the Antonio Segni botanical garden, laid out in 1968 over 5,000 m²53,820 sq ft, is a good place to learn the flora of the Dolomites.

For a day trip, the hut is 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes from the Capanna Trieste car park; it is also 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes from the Tissi.

Without a car, come back via the Listolade stop on line 3, less than half an hour from Alleghe Piazza: Capanna Trieste is not served. In summer 2026, the last bus left at 6:55 pm from Monday to Saturday, but at 5:21 pm on Sundays and public holidays (Dolomiti Bus timetable for lines 2, 3 and 54).

When Is the Best Time to Hike From Alleghe?

Without a car, aim for late June to early September: in 2026, that is the only period when line 1 and lines 2, 3 and 54 all ran (29 June - 9 September). The gondolas ran from 13 June to 27 September, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm without a break. The 2027 dates are not yet published: check them in spring on the Dolomiti Bus and Alleghe Funivie sites linked above, and each hut’s opening on its page.
