Rifugio Croda da Lago
Rifugio Croda da Lago stands at 2,046 m6,713 ft on the western shore of Lago Federa, a deeply photogenic alpine lake framed by larch trees and the massive north face of Croda da Lago. The reflection of the rock wall in the lake's still water is one of the most iconic images in the Dolomites. The hut is a key stop on the Dolomites Alta Via 1 and draws photographers, painters, and hikers throughout the summer.
The setting is remarkably peaceful despite its fame. The lake sits in a shallow basin surrounded by ancient larch forest, and the trails approaching from every direction offer constantly changing perspectives on the surrounding peaks. To the north, the view extends toward the Tofane and Cristallo groups. Autumn is especially rewarding, when the larches turn brilliant gold against the grey limestone.
The hut accommodates 50 guests in dormitories and a few private rooms. The terrace overlooking the lake is the perfect spot for an afternoon drink. The most common approach is a 90-minute walk from Campo di Sotto above Cortina or a longer route via Passo Giau. The hut is family-run and warmly welcoming, but its popularity means booking well in advance is essential from July onward.
